We offer Virtual Reality Trainings and CEU Workshops for Recreational Therapists

Virtual Reality (VR) is an emerging technology that is quickly making its way into health care programs. Commercial VR systems like the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift have made owning a personal console possible both for clients and therapists. Research has shown that using virtual reality in health care can improve functional outcomes for diverse clients, yet CTRSs have found time and training to be a barrier to use in their facilities. VR Training workshops provide valuable information about VR use and treatment implementation for RT professionals.

We are not currently offering trainings at this time. If you would like to host a virtual reality training on site or have questions, please contact
Rhonda Nelson at rhonda.nelson@hsc.utah.edu for more information.

ATRA Preconference Workshop

Topics: This session was designed for participants interested in gaining hands-on experience with commercial virtual reality (VR) equipment and games/applications with relevance for use in recreational therapy (RT) practice. Next, participants role played a variety of RT treatment sessions using nine different VR games/applications with relevance for diverse populations and practice settings.  This intensive experiential learning considered issues for both therapists and clients assisted participants in developing professional confidence and competence in implementing VR interventions. It also fostered an understanding of how VR could be implemented in their own RT practice. The session concluded with a group discussion about clinical implications in diverse settings in order to obtain a broader understanding of possible uses for VR in the RT profession.  Space was limited to 16 participants to maximize experiential learning opportunities.
